On this day in 79 CE, small earthquakes started taking place around Mt. Vesuvius. As minor tremors were common in the region, the Romans living in Pompeii, Herculaneum, and other cities south of Vesuvius did not recognize the quakes as warnings of the catastrophic eruption to come on   August 24, which would kill around 16,000 people.
